More than 3 million calls a year make the mental health helplines ring night and day.
There is always the same hope of help, that of finding a human voice at the end of the line, a benevolent support that will answer, listen, help, and perhaps loosen for a few moments the stranglehold of a pain that can be colossal.
The listeners are the consoling watchmen of our time, who welcome with patience and altruism all the sorrows and torments of our society.
It is through their listening and the words they speak that we perceive, in a hollow way, all the deep evils from which our time suffers, its wounds and the obvious need for a supplement of humanity.
